Maryland Free-State Treasure Club Meeting Minutes, April 24, 2014. The meeting was conducted at the Victory Villa Community Center, 404 Compass Rd., Baltimore, MD 21220, 410-887-0258. Submitted by Christine Wisnom, secretary.

Call to Order: At 7:35 P.M. the meeting was called to order by the President, Mr. Gary Pennington. Gary introduced the club officers; Howard Shettle, vice president (who also oversees the display board) Steve Cunningham, treasurer, and Christine Wisnom, secretary.

It is nice to have Christine Wisnom with us again after several months vacation. A very large thanks to Frank Silva, Robert Darretta, Nichole Venker and Alvin “Bud” Lamb for doing an excellent job of filling in as secretary and keeping the minutes of our meetings in her absence. Each contributed a huge amount to our newsletters.

New Members: We welcome new members Jerry McCall, Robert Baranowski, Justin Schley, Dave and Nicholas Franz and John Vice. Steve Huber came as a quest to check us out.

Volunteers: Thank you to Dan Beavers who manned the ticket sales for our 50-50 and silver dollar drawings and to Jim Bialozynski and his son Austin who provided our refreshments.

Club Raffle: Leo Pollock has requested that members who took raffle tickets for sale need to turn in what money they have, so we can get a count on how many tickets are still left to be sold.

Attendance: 37 primary members, new members, family members and guests attended the April 24th meeting.

Treasurers ReportMr. Cunningham conveyed that the M.F.S.T.C. has $2153.36 in the bank and $300.22 petty cash in wrapped coins and bills. The M.F.S.T.C. currently has an account balance of $185.71 in the Middle River Recreation and Parks account.

Membership Cards: Unclaimed 2014 membership cards were displayed on the front table, as they will be every meeting.

Trash Drive: We need more trash! Please collect the trash you find while metal detecting and bring the wretched stuff to our meeting so we can display it at the end of the year for journalists and county officials to see.

New Metal Detecting Brochure: Steve Cunningham designed, took photographs of some club members in action and had printed a metal detecting brochure about the hobby and our club. Thank you to those who took a bundle to libraries and sports centers. The theme behind the brochure is to repair holes and carry out dug up trash.

Dealers Report: Bob Taylor, one of our members and owner of Taylor Metal Detectors, will bring ordered merchandise to the meetings if members call him in advance. You may contact Bob by calling 1-410-734-6335 or visit his website by the same name.
Mark Krieger brought some military backpacks and pouches to the meeting for sale. The backpacks are ideal for deep woods metal detecting and the pouches are great for collecting trash or stowing gear.

April 19th Club Outing: Our second club hunt at this location was a terrific success for getting to know each other, but a flop when it comes to treasure. Trash was the predominant find as usual.

Danny Beavers, Andy cooper, Steve Cunningham, Dave Denkenberger, Gene Dixon, Eric Heilman, George Hendley, Frank Hollen, Brad JohnsMike McCullough, Frank Silva, Nancy Sommer, Mike Stinemire, Bill Wise and Frank Ziemski were present along with M.A.R.S. members: Lance Griffin, Bobby LaLuna, Bjorn Moreau, Brian Snider, Josh Suller, Paul Sweeney and Jim Wagner.

Clad coins, tokens and junk jewelry were unearthed and it was reported that a .925 silver earring and a small silver charm was collected. Some photos made it to our website under the date 04/19/14 in our Members' Finds 2014 link. Thank you to the members who sent photos in.

Next Club Outing: Will be May 17, 10:00 AM. We will focus on beginners who need instruction on digging techniques, target discrimination, and all-metal-mode. We will have a test field of common objects including typical trash, jewelry and coins. Of course, our more experienced detectorists are welcome to search for jewelry and old coins.

Unrepaired Holes: Several members have reported seeing unrepaired holes at various locations. Leo Pollock found what looked like square holes left unrepaired. Mike McCullough’s report takes the cake: Mike reported seeing 30 unrepaired holes at a local school in Jackasonville, MD. He filled them as he detected the area. On another day out, Mike saw the same at a local playground. He thinks he is inadvertently following the unknown vandal and hopes to catch him in the act soon. Please do your part repairing holes left by careless individuals to help protect the hobby.

2014 M.F.S.T.C. Open Treasure Hunt: Be sure to pick up or download a registration form for our 2014 Open Treasure Hunt which will be held October 12, 2014 at Sandy Point State Park. Numerous prizes, generously provided by several sponsors and club funds, will be awarded. It will be a day for the entire family to attend a cook-out and picnic and enjoy the park. Please mark it on your calendar. Our president, Mr. Gary Pennington, his family and other officers will assist with the organization and administration of the annual event.

Display Board: Howard Shettle, our vice president, announced the winners of our April display board contest as follows: Coins – Kurt Franz took first; Leo Pollock second; and Bill Hill won third place. Relics – Kurt Franz came in first, Dave Denkenberger took second and Bill Hill got third place. George Hendley won the club special.

Adjournment: The April 24th meeting was adjourned at 9:05 PM.

Our Next Meeting: The next meeting will be held on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 7:30 PM preceded by our mini hunt starting at 7:00 PM. There is no digging at our mini hunt outside, just surface tokens. Bring only your detector, pinpointer and pouch.

See you there,
Steve
